BGU Writes of Passage CURRICULUM

This non-static curriculum integrates the literacies of Hip Hop Feminism (as well as earlier canons) with academic and creative writing techniques to foster innovation and to affirm healthy self-images for blackgirls. Each session includes two, 3-hour workshops with provided lunch. 

SESSION 1 – ”I AM…”

  • name and honor the work of our mothers, othermothers and Village(s)

  • participate in an intimate poetry circle and mindful breathing exercises

  • create interview protocols, conduct interviews and analyze transcripts

  • map your creative writing style

SESSION 2 – SPIT THE LIT

  • examine the praxis of The Black Arts Movement, Black Feminism, and Hip Hop Feminism

  • align intergenerational texts

  • construct academic argument​

SESSION 3 – AUTHOR THE CULTURE

  • compose mixed collection of your choice (e.g. poetry, short prose, fiction, essay, op/ed)

  • workshop your material in an intimate circle of writers

  • design and workshop your curriculum/perform your material in a public venue
